Project B17 – Function, mechanism and structural basis for the regulation of gene expression by small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) in gamma-proteobacteria

This project aims to delineate how sRNAs and other regulatory RNA elements act in conjunction with the RNA binding proteins Hfq and ProQ in order to regulate the biosynthesis of natural products or natural competence in several natural product-producing bacteria. The overall project is broken down into three sub-projects, each addressing a specific aim: 1) To understand how sRNAs regulate biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for secondary metabolite production in Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus; 2) To gain mechanistic insights into the role of Hfq and ProQ in the RNA-mediated regulatory mechanisms for natural product biosynthesis in Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus; 3) To characterize the structural basis for ProQ-protein mediated RNA-based regulatory processes in Legionella pneumophila.
